Arawa is the largest town and former capital of the Autonomous Region of Bougainville in Papua New Guinea, developed from the 1970s as the civic headquarters of Bougainville Copper Ltd. It had a population of 36,443 at the 2000 census, then Papua New Guinea's fourth largest town, but was heavily damaged during the Bougainville Civil War, after which the capital moved to Buka.
