Ariel is an Israeli settlement in the central West Bank, about 20 kilometers east of the Green Line, with a population of 22,191 in 2024 including veteran Israeli families, English speaking immigrants, former Soviet Union immigrants and over 10,000 university students. Established in 1978 on land declared state land and granted city council status in 1998, it is the fifth largest Israeli settlement in the West Bank. Its name means Lion of God in Hebrew and is a biblical designation for Jerusalem; the international community considers Israeli settlements in the West Bank illegal under international law, a view the Israeli government disputes.
