Artvin is a city in northeastern Turkey about 30 kilometers inland from the Black Sea, administrative seat of Artvin Province and Artvin District, on a hill overlooking the Coruh River near the Deriner Dam. The city was ceded to the newly established Turkish state under the Treaty of Kars in 1921, after periods of Ottoman, Russian and Georgian control, and its medieval fortress once lay within the Georgian district of Nigali; Artvin is also a former bishopric and vacant Armenian Catholic titular see, and is home to Artvin Coruh University.
