Asea

Southern Europe

Asea was an ancient city in the Maenalia district of Arcadia, near the border with Laconia, on the route linking Megalopolis, Pallantium and Tegea. The site was occupied from at least the late Early Helladic period, possibly as early as 6000 BC, through the Middle Helladic era, and its residents fought at the Battle of Plataea in 479 BC during the Greco-Persian Wars. After the founding of Megalopolis in 371 BC most of its inhabitants relocated there, though Asea kept some independence before eventually coming under Megalopolis's control. The site held Doric temples to Poseidon and Athena, and by the time of the traveler Pausanias in the 2nd century AD the city was in ruins, though its acropolis was still visible.
