Asine

Southern Europe

Asine was a town of ancient Messenia in Greece, built by the Dryopes people after they were expelled from an earlier Asine in the Argolid. Around 740 BC, during a war between Sparta and Argos, the Asinaeans sided with Sparta, and the Argives besieged and razed the town in retaliation, sparing only its temple to Apollo Pythaeus. The Asinaeans escaped by sea, and after the First Messenian War Sparta granted them Messenian territory where they founded a new Asine.
