Assos

Assos was an ancient Greek city founded between 1000 and 900 BC by Aeolian colonists on the Aegean coast of the Troad, in what is now Canakkale Province, Turkey, and it held the only good harbor along some 80 kilometers of coastline. It built a Doric temple to Athena around 530 BC, the only Doric-order temple known in Asia Minor, and the philosopher Aristotle founded an academy there in 348 BC before Persian forces killed his patron Hermias; the Stoic philosopher Cleanthes was also born in the city. The apostle Paul and Luke the Evangelist are recorded visiting Assos during Paul's third missionary journey, and the site was added to UNESCO's tentative World Heritage list in 2017.
