Asuncion is the capital and largest city of Paraguay, located on the eastern bank of the Paraguay River. One of South America's oldest cities and the longest continually inhabited area in the Rio de la Plata Basin, it is nicknamed "the Mother of Cities." Founded on 15 August 1537, it had a population of 462,241 as of the 2022 census.
