Atambua is the seat of Belu Regency in the north of western Timor Island, East Nusa Tenggara province, Indonesia, with a 2024 population estimate of 79,157 across 63.80 square kilometers. Established by the Dutch in October 1916 after relocating administration from Atapupu, it was briefly occupied by Japanese forces from 1942 to 1943, and after East Timor's 1999 independence vote it received more than 250,000 refugees, roughly 60,000 of whom still remained in camps there by 2002.
