Atarneus

Atarneus was an ancient Greek city in the region of Aeolis in Asia Minor, on the mainland opposite the island of Lesbos, along the road linking Adramyttium to the plain of the Caicus; its site is identified with Kale Tepe near modern Dikili in Turkey's İzmir Province. The city flourished in the fourth century BC under the ruler Hermias, a friend of the philosopher Aristotle, who spent time at Atarneus under the guardianship of Proxenus and later married Hermias's niece Pythias. Atarneus was abandoned by the first century BC, possibly following an epidemic, and by the time of Pliny the Elder it no longer existed as an inhabited city.
