Athens is the capital of Greece, built on a coastal plain of Attica ringed by Mount Hymettus, Mount Pentelicus, and Mount Parnitha, with the limestone outcrop of the Acropolis rising at its center. Its Mediterranean climate of hot, dry summers and mild winters, and its position near the natural harbor at Piraeus, made it a hub of seaborne trade and naval power in the ancient Aegean.
