Atyrau is the capital of Atyrau Region in Kazakhstan, with a population of 404,129 as of 2024, situated where the Ural River meets the Caspian Sea and conventionally divided by that river between Europe and Asia. It is a major hub for the oil-rich Caspian Depression, with extensive petroleum refining operations, and lies about 351 kilometers east of the Russian city of Astrakhan.
