Augsburg is a city in the Bavarian part of Swabia in southern Germany, roughly fifty kilometres west of Munich. It is the regional seat of the Regierungsbezirk of Swabia, an urban district in its own right, and a university town with a well-preserved historic centre. With about 304,000 residents it ranks as the third-largest city in Bavaria after Munich and Nuremberg, and about 885,000 people live in its metropolitan area. The Romans founded it in 15 BC as Augusta Vindelicorum, naming it for the emperor Augustus, which makes it one of the oldest cities in Germany. It was a Free Imperial City from 1276 to 1803, and the Fugger and Welser families based there dominated European banking in the sixteenth century. It was also a centre of the Reformation, hosting the Augsburg Confession of 1530 and the Peace of Augsburg of 1555. Its Fuggerei social housing complex dates from 1513, and its medieval water management system became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2019.
