Baja is a city with county rights in Bacs-Kiskun County in southern Hungary, about 150 kilometers south of Budapest, with a 2023 population of roughly 33,142, the second largest in its county after Kecskemet. Likely established in the 14th century in an area continuously inhabited since the end of the Iron Age, it received town rights in 1696 and became an important regional center under Ottoman rule. Baja sits where the Great Hungarian Plain meets Transdanubia, divided by the Danube River, and serves as a transportation and commercial hub for the surrounding region.
