Bakar

Bakar is a town in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County in western Croatia, built on a hill overlooking the Bay of Bakar; its name comes from the Croatian word for copper. The town has long served as a port for bulk cargo and was historically home to a coke factory that operated until 1995, and its historic core was designated a cultural monument in 1968. According to the 2011 census the town had 8,279 residents in the wider municipality, with 1,473 in the titular settlement, and the population is about 90 percent ethnic Croat.
