Bakersfield is a city in and the county seat of Kern County, California, covering about 151 square miles near the southern end of the San Joaquin Valley in the state's Central Valley region. Long a center of oil production and agriculture, Bakersfield is also known as the birthplace of the Bakersfield sound, a twangy, electrified style of country music associated with musicians such as Buck Owens and Merle Haggard.
