Baktaloranthaza

Baktaloranthaza is a town in Szabolcs-Szatmar-Bereg County, in the Northern Great Plain region of eastern Hungary, with about 3,987 residents as of 2015 across 35.25 square kilometers. The area has been settled since the late Copper Age, and the earliest written record of the settlement, then called Bakta, dates to 1271. Count Laszlo Barkoczy had a castle built there between 1618 and 1638, which Francis II Rakoczi visited frequently in the 1710s. The town had a Jewish community of about 211 people in 1930, most of whom were murdered in the Holocaust. Baktaloranthaza is now a regional educational center, with a high school serving about 1,500 students, and it maintains a sister city relationship with Lancut, Poland.
