Balkanabat is the administrative centre of Balkan Province, Turkmenistan's largest province, at the foot of the Balkan Daglary mountains about 450 kilometres west of the capital Ashgabat. Founded in 1933 as Neftedag, meaning oil mountain, it was renamed Nebit-Dag in 1946 and took its current name in 2001; it had a population of 87,822 at a 2025 estimate and remains a centre of petroleum and natural gas production.
