Balkhash, also spelled Balqash, is a city in Qaragandy Region of Kazakhstan, on the northern shore of Lake Balkhash in the Bay of Bertys, in the south of the Kazakh Uplands. Its population is around 68,800, and the city economy is tied to the copper mining and smelting operations established on the lakeshore.
