Balykchy is a town at the western end of Lake Issyk-Kul in northeastern Kyrgyzstan, at an elevation of about 1,900 meters, and serves as the capital of Issyk-Kul Region. During the Soviet era it was a significant industrial and transport hub, with wool and crop processing, lake shipping and a rail terminal, but it lost most of that economic base after the Soviet collapse; the main road from Bishkek toward China's Torugart Pass still passes through it.
