Bantul is a town and district in Indonesia Special Region of Yogyakarta, serving as the capital of Bantul Regency about ten kilometers south of Yogyakarta city on the road to the beach resort of Parangtritis. It functions as a regional service center with banks, schools, medical clinics and government offices, and it suffered heavy loss of life and widespread destruction of housing in the devastating 2006 Yogyakarta earthquake.
