Baotou is the second-largest city by urban population in Inner Mongolia, China, a prefecture-level city on the northern bank of the Yellow River. Its total population was about 2.7 million at the 2020 census. Baotou processes over half of the world's rare-earth minerals, materials essential to electronics, wind turbines and electric vehicle motors, and it also developed as a major steel-producing center during China's early socialist period, earning it the nickname "City of Steel in the Grasslands."
