Bar is a coastal city and seaport on the Adriatic coast of Montenegro, seat of Bar Municipality in the country's Coastal region. The settlement traces its roots to the medieval fortress of Antibarium, first documented in the 10th century, and passed through Nemanjic, Venetian (1443-1571) and Ottoman (1571-1878) rule before joining Montenegro. The 2023 census recorded 15,868 residents in the city proper and 46,171 across the municipality, making it the third-largest city in Montenegro. Bar is the terminus of the Belgrade-Bar railway, opened in 1976, and its port handles millions of tons of cargo a year, anchoring the region's economy.
