Bareilly

Southern Asia

Bareilly is a city in Uttar Pradesh, India, on the Indo-Gangetic Plains along the bank of the Ramganga River, about 252 kilometers northwest of Lucknow and 265 kilometers east of New Delhi. Its earliest settlement dates to 1537, founded by the local chieftain Jagat Singh Katehriya and named after his two sons, while the modern city foundation was laid by the Mughal governor Mukrand Rai in 1657; it later became a center of the Kingdom of Rohilkhand before passing to British control in 1801, briefly ruled independently by Khan Bahadur Khan during the 1857 rebellion. Bareilly is the place of origin of the Barelvi movement within Islam, founded by the scholar Ahmad Raza Khan, and carries nicknames including Nath Nagri, for its seven ancient Shiva temples, and Jumka City. With a 2011 population of 903,668, the eighth most populous city in Uttar Pradesh, it functions today as a furniture and agricultural trade hub and is included among the cities selected under the Smart Cities Mission in India.
