Beit Shemesh is a city in Israel's Jerusalem District, about 30 kilometers west of Jerusalem, whose name means House of the Sun in Hebrew and derives from the biblical city of Beth Shemesh in the territory of the Tribe of Judah. The modern city was established in 1950 on the site of a displaced persons camp, with permanent housing built from 1952, and it lies near Tel Beit Shemesh, an archaeological site with remains reaching back to a Bronze Age Canaanite settlement. As of 2024 the city had 176,786 residents and functions as a center of Haredi Judaism and Modern Orthodoxy.
