City
Belbina (Argolis)
Southern Europe
Belbina was a town on a small island of the same name, now called Saint George, at the entrance to the Saronic Gulf about 10 miles from the promontory of Sunium, in what is now Greece. Although closer to Attica, the island was counted as belonging to the Peloponnese, specifically to ancient Argolis, and was settled by Dorians, probably as a colony from Belemina, a town on the border of Laconia and Arcadia. The Athenian statesman Themistocles cited the island as one of the most insignificant places in Greece. It is now uninhabited, but traces of ancient terraces survive on its hillsides, along with the remains of the ancient town on one of its summits.
