The capital, largest city and main port of Northern Ireland, standing on the banks of the river Lagan and connected to the open sea through Belfast Lough and the North Channel. It is the most populous city in Northern Ireland and the second-largest on the island of Ireland after Dublin, with a recorded population of 345,418 in 2021 and 704,406 across its greater metropolitan area.
