Berane

Berane is a town and municipality in northern Montenegro, on the Lim river, with 9,532 residents in the town proper and 25,162 across the wider municipality at the 2023 census. Known in the Middle Ages as Budimlja, it was an important center of the medieval Serbian state, and it was renamed Ivangrad between 1949 and 1992 before reverting to its historic name. Liberated from Ottoman rule in 1912 and incorporated into Montenegro, it grew into a major Yugoslav industrial center and remains an important educational, medical, religious and sporting hub in the region.
