Betio is an island and township at the southwestern corner of Tarawa Atoll in Kiribati, the largest township of the capital South Tarawa, with a population of 17,356 at the 2015 census. It was the site of the Battle of Tarawa in November 1943 during the Second World War and remains Kiribati's primary port and an economic hub, with wartime relics from both the Japanese occupation and the American assault still visible.
