Betun is the capital of Malaka Regency in East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. Along with Atambua, the town served as a shelter for refugees fleeing neighboring East Timor after violence and destruction followed the 1999 vote by that territory for independence from Indonesia, and it again received an influx of refugees when violence erupted in East Timor in 2006.
