Bhopal is the capital city of the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh and administrative headquarters of both Bhopal district and division, known as the City of Lakes for the numerous natural and artificial lakes within and around it. The city is internationally remembered for the 1984 Bhopal gas disaster, one of the world's worst industrial accidents, and today serves as a major administrative, educational and commercial center for central India.
