Bhubaneswar is the capital and largest city of the Indian state of Odisha, in Khordha district. Its city population was about 837,700 at the 2011 census, with an estimated metropolitan population of about 2 million by 2024. Established in 1948 to replace Cuttack as the state capital and designed by the German architect Otto Konigsberger, Bhubaneswar is known as the "Temple City" for its many Hindu, Buddhist and Jain temples and forms Odisha's "Golden Triangle" of tourism together with Puri and Konark.
