Bijeljina

Bijeljina is a city and municipality in the Republika Srpska entity of Bosnia and Herzegovina, in the country's northeast, serving as the provincial center of Semberija, a flat and fertile agricultural region bounded by the Sava and Drina rivers and extending over the Majevica mountains. First documented in 1446, it fell to the Ottomans in 1530 and passed to Austrian rule after the Great Turkish War before coming under Austro-Hungarian administration from 1878 to 1918; it gained official city status in July 2012. The 2013 census recorded 107,715 inhabitants, the sixth largest city in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the second largest in Republika Srpska after Banja Luka, and Bijeljina was designated a European City of Sport in 2020.
