Bitlis is a city in southeastern Turkey, seat of both Bitlis District and Bitlis Province, with a population of 53,023 as of 2021. It sits at an elevation of 1,545 meters in the steep-sided valley of the Bitlis River, a tributary of the Tigris, 15 kilometers from Lake Van, and its local economy rests mainly on agriculture along with limited leatherworking, tobacco processing and textile dyeing.
