Bolsward is a city in the Sudwest-Fryslan municipality in the province of Friesland, Netherlands, about 10 kilometers west northwest of Sneek. First mentioned in AD 725, it joined the Hanseatic League in 1422 and was granted city rights by Philip the Good in 1455, functioning historically as a trading center and port. The city hosts the Elfstedentocht, an ice skating marathon connecting eleven Frisian towns, along with an annual cycling version of the event, and it was the birthplace of poet Gysbert Japiks and Carmelite philosopher Titus Brandsma. Its population was just under 10,200, with 10,085 recorded in the 2021 census.
