Bonn is the Federal City of Bonn in Germany's North Rhine-Westphalia state, on the Rhine about 24 kilometers south-southeast of Cologne, with a population exceeding 320,000 across 141.06 square kilometers. Founded in the 1st century BC as a settlement of the Ubii and later part of Roman Germania Inferior, it was capital of the Electorate of Cologne from 1597 to 1794 and served as West Germany's capital from 1949 to 1990 and the reunified nation's seat of government until 1999; under the Berlin-Bonn Act it still retains about a third of federal ministerial jobs.
