Borongan is a component city and the capital of Eastern Samar province, in the Eastern Visayas region of the Philippines. Established as a pueblo on September 8, 1619 and chartered as a city in 2007, a status the Supreme Court affirmed in 2011 against a constitutional challenge, it had a 2024 census population of 71,431 across 475 square kilometers, the most populous local government unit in the province. The city sits on the northern bank of the Lo-om River, set back from Borongan Bay on the Pacific coast, and is known as the City of the Golden Sunrise.
