Bourtange is a village of about 430 residents in the municipality of Westerwolde in the Netherlands, in the Westerwolde region of eastern Groningen province near the German border. Fort Bourtange, a star-shaped fortification built in 1593 during the Dutch Revolt and used until 1851, was restored between 1967 and 1992 to its mid-18th-century appearance and now operates as an open-air museum.
