Bredevoort is a small city with city privileges in the municipality of Aalten, Gelderland province, Netherlands, with about 1,660 residents in 2021 across 6.73 square kilometers. First named in a 1188 property record of the Archbishop of Cologne, it was conquered by Maurice of Nassau in 1597 and retaken by Spanish forces in 1606, merged into Aalten municipality in 1818, and has rebranded itself since as a book town with more than twenty second-hand bookshops.
