The Czech Republic's second-largest city after the capital Prague, in the South Moravian Region at the confluence of the Svitava and Svratka rivers. With about 404,000 inhabitants in the city proper and roughly 730,000 across its metropolitan area, it ranks among the hundred largest cities in the European Union.
