Broken Hill is a mining city in the far west of outback New South Wales, Australia, near the South Australian border, on the traditional lands of the Wilyakali people. Founded in 1883 after the discovery of the Broken Hill silver lead zinc ore deposit, it had a population of 17,456 at the 2021 census and is described as Australia's longest running mining town, gaining National Heritage listing in 2015. Known historically as the Silver City, it lies over 1,100 kilometres west of Sydney and is noted for its parks, gardens and the Living Desert Sculptures.
