A city in western New York on the eastern shore of Lake Erie, at the head of the Niagara River where it meets the Canadian border, and the seat of Erie County. Its 2020 census population of 278,349 makes it New York's second-most populous city, and its metropolitan area of over 1.16 million is the state's second-largest behind only greater New York City.
