Bushehr

Southern Asia

Bushehr is a port city on the Persian Gulf coast of Iran, serving as the capital of Bushehr province, Bushehr County and its central district. The 2016 census recorded 223,504 residents in the city itself and 398,581 in its wider metropolitan area. Bushehr began as a minor fishing village until 1734, when the military commander Nader Shah made it the headquarters of his Persian Gulf fleet, launching its rise as a major commercial port, and by the nineteenth century it had overtaken Bandar Abbas as the most important trading center in Iran. The city sits at low elevation on the coast and has a hot semi-arid climate with limited rainfall.
