Byron Bay is a beachside town in the far north east of New South Wales, Australia, on Bundjalung Country, about 772 kilometres north of Sydney and 165 kilometres south of Brisbane. Its traditional name was Cavvanbah, meaning meeting place, in the Minjungbal language, and the adjoining headland of Cape Byron marks the easternmost point of mainland Australia. European settlement began in the 1830s and the town formally took the name Byron Bay in 1894, and it recorded a population of 6,330 at the 2021 census.
