Caernarfon

Caernarfon is a town in Gwynedd, Wales, with a population of 9,852. Built on the site of the Roman fort of Segontium, established around AD 80, it grew around Caernarfon Castle, one of the largest fortifications built by the English in Wales, begun immediately after Edward I's conquest of Wales in 1283 and continued until 1330; the castle and town walls, among the finest surviving examples of late 13th and early 14th century military architecture in Europe, were named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986 alongside other royal castles of Gwynedd, and the town has hosted the National Eisteddfod seven times.
