Calais is a major French port city in the Pas-de-Calais department, of which it is a subprefecture, and the largest city in that department. Its population is 67,585 within the city proper and 144,488 across its urban area as of 2022. Calais overlooks the Strait of Dover, the narrowest point of the English Channel at about 34 kilometers wide, making it the closest French town to England; the White Cliffs of Dover are visible from Calais on a clear day. It is a major ferry port between France and England, and has been linked to Folkestone by the Channel Tunnel since 1994.
