Campo Grande is a city in west-central Brazil, capital and largest city of Mato Grosso do Sul state. Its population was about 962,900 in 2025, the 17th largest in Brazil. Made state capital in 1977 when Mato Grosso was divided, Campo Grande grew from about 140,000 residents in 1970 to over 750,000 by 2007 and today reflects immigrant communities from Japan (notably Okinawa), the Middle East, Europe and Paraguay, laid out with wide, tree-lined avenues.
