Çankırı

Cankiri is a city in the Central Anatolia region of Turkey, about 140 kilometers northeast of Ankara, and serves as the administrative seat of both Cankiri Province and Cankiri District, with a population of 90,564 recorded in the 2021 census. Known in antiquity as Gangra, it appears to have once been the capital of Paphlagonia and the seat of that kingdom's last king; the Romans later called it Germanicopolis, and in the 4th century it hosted the Synod of Gangra, an influential early Christian church council. The city subsequently passed through Byzantine, Seljuk and Ottoman rule before becoming part of the modern Turkish republic in 1923.
