The capital and largest city of Wales, forming a principal area officially known as the City and County of Cardiff, with a population of 383,919 in 2024 and ranking as the eleventh-largest city in the United Kingdom. Located in the southeast of Wales within the Cardiff Capital Region, home to roughly half the nation's population, it grew from a small town in the early 19th century into a major coal-exporting port, was ranked a city in 1905, and was proclaimed the capital of Wales in 1955.
