Carnuntum was a Roman legionary fortress and headquarters of the Pannonian fleet from around 50 AD, later becoming capital of the province of Pannonia Superior and growing into a city of approximately 50,000 inhabitants. Its remains lie on the Danube in Lower Austria, roughly halfway between Vienna and Bratislava, within the Carnuntum Archaeological Park near the modern villages of Petronell-Carnuntum and Bad Deutsch-Altenburg.
