Carson City is an independent city and the capital of the U.S. state of Nevada, which developed from a stopover for westbound travelers into a significant urban center following the discovery of silver at the nearby Comstock Lode. It has been Nevada's capital since 1861, when the territory was still organized, and ranks as the state's sixth most populous city.
